Kasey Reuter capped off an impressive weekend with her first career double-double.
COLUMBIA, Mo. - For the second consecutive match, freshman Kasey Reuter (Sioux City, Iowa) led Mizzou with 15 kills, this time doing so in a 3-2, five-set win (23-25, 25-21, 23-25, 27-25, 15-6) over Ole Miss on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 16) at the Hearnes Center. The win improves the Tigers to 16-14 on the year and 7-8 in SEC play. Reuter led Mizzou with her first career double-double, posting 15 kills on .609 hitting with 12 digs. In all, four Tigers finished with double-digit kills on Sunday as Mizzou out-hit Ole Miss, .362-.193.
"I thought we showed a lot of character in bouncing back after a tough loss on Friday night," head coach Wayne Kreklow said. "Falling behind 2-1 is never an easy thing to bounce back from, but we showed a lot of fight against a good Ole Miss team. We made a lot plays down the stretch and did a nice job of seizing the momentum going into the fifth set."
Reuter was spectacular all weekend, tallying 30 kill over the two Tiger matches. She reset her career-high by hitting .609 on Sunday while her 15 kills matched a career-best, originally set Friday night against Georgia. Her 12 digs in the match were also a career-best. In addition to Reuter, Mizzou got offense from a lot of different places. Senior Emily Wilson (Omaha, Neb.) tallied 11 kills on .296 hitting and classmate Whitney Little (Keller, Texas) added 10 on .500 hitting. Additionally, sophomore All-American Carly Kan (Honolulu, Hawaii) tallied her SEC-leading 17th double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Emily Thater (Springfield, Mo.) added eight kills on .538 hitting and Julia Towler (Blue Springs, Mo.) gave the Tigers a great lift off the bench with six kill on .600 hitting.
As good as the Tiger offense was, it was the Tiger defense that was the story. Mizzou tallied a season-high 17.5 total blocks and forced Ole Miss into 32 attack errors, limiting the Rebels to .193 hitting. Ole Miss conversely had just five blocks in the match and Mizzou hit .362. Little led the way with eight blocks, just missing a kill-block double-double while Wilson pitched in a career-high six. Regan Peltier (Nixa, Mo.) added six block as well, going along with five kills. In the back row, senior libero Sarah Meister (San Diego, Calif.) pulled in 22 digs, the third time in four matches she has eclipsed the 20-dig mark. The setting duo of Loxley Keala (Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Ali Kreklow (Columbia, Mo.) combined for 55 assists with 27 and 28, respectively.
Mizzou will be back in action next weekend at LSU and at Texas A&M in its final road trip of the year. For all the latest on Mizzou volleyball, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on twitter @MizzouVB.
