
Mizzou Loses to Kansas in OT, 75-70

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The University of Missouri women's basketball team fought back from a second half deficit but fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 75-70 in overtime Saturday night in Lawrence, Kan.. The loss dropped the Tigers' record to 12-14 overall and 4-8 in Big 12 Conference play, while the Jayhawks improved to 17-9 and 4-8.
Senior RaeShara Brown paced the Tigers with 23 points, including 18 in the second half and overtime. Sophomore Sydney Crafton recorded her third career double-double with 11 points and a personal best 15 rebounds, while junior BreAnna Brock had 12 points.
With Kansas on top 61-60, Brown grabbed an offensive board and dished to senior Shakara Jones, who converted a layup at the 1:40 mark for Mizzou's first lead since the first half. Jones missed the ensuing free throw but neither team could find the bottom of the basket in the next minute. Crafton made one of-two free throws with 22.9 seconds remaining for a 62-60 Tiger lead but Kansas' Monica Engelman hit a running jumper with 1.9 left to force overtime.
The Jayhawks built six-point advantage, 70-64, with 1:59 remaining in the extra session. A three-pointer from Brown with 1:43 left got the Tigers within three. The squad had the chance to cut into Kansas' lead but Brock missed two free throws with 45.8 seconds and Engelman hit another jumper for a 72-67 Jayhawk lead with 19.4 on the clock. Kansas hit its free throws down the stretch to earn the 75-70 victory.
Davis led the Jayhawks with 34 points.
With the Tigers holding an early 6-1 advantage, the Jayhawks went on a 14-4 run to grab a 15-10 lead with 10:14 remaining in the first frame. Kansas remained hot from the field and increased its lead to six, 22-16, after Monica Engelman drilled a three-pointer with 7:54 on the clock.
Five straight points from sophomore Trenee Thornton cut Mizzou's deficit to 24-23 at the 6:28 mark. However the Jayhawks used seven points Carolyn Davis and another two from Tania Jackson for a 33-28 game with 2:46 left in the half.
Brock scored her 11th and 12th points of the first frame to pull the Tigers within three at the 1:59 mark and Brown nailed a three to knot the score at 33-33 with 29 seconds on the clock. Missouri got the ball back after a Kansas turnover but sophomore Sydney Crafton's baseline jumper rimmed out for a 33-33 halftime score.
The game remained tied at 40-40, the Jayhawks began to feed Davis in the post to gain a 50-43 advantage with 12:15 left in the contest. Davis had KU's final six points of the run.
Two baskets from Brown and two free throws from Crafton brought Missouri within 51-50 at the 8:05 mark. Kansas pulled ahead to led 58-53 after a layup from Davis with 4:47 remaining in the game. But Brown hit baskets on consecutive possessions, a three-pointer and a layup, to tie the contest at 58-58 with 2:51 left.
Mizzou travels to Lincoln, Neb., on Tuesday, Feb. 22 to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 7 p.m. The Tigers then return to Mizzou Arena to host the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m.
