CINCINNATI, Ohio - The University of Missouri women's basketball team suffered a 83-51 loss to the No. 9 Xavier Musketeers Wednesday night at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Tigers dropped to 8-6 on the year, while the Musketeers improved to 11-2.
Senior RaeShara Brown paced the Tigers with 15 points and seven assists. Junior Christine Flores scored 14 points and pulled down a team high seven rebounds while senior Shakara Jones added 13 points and six rebounds.
The Musketeers could not miss from behind the arc in the game's opening minutes, building an 18-4 advantage with 12:27 remaining in the first frame. Mizzou used two baskets from Flores and a jumper from junior Bailey Gee off an inbounds play to cut Xavier's lead to 20-10 with 10:55 on the clock but the Musketeers responded to take a 32-15 advantage five minutes later.
Back-to-back layups from Jones and Brown put the score at 32-19 but Xavier closed the first half on a 9-2 run to take a 41-21 lead into the break. Seven of the Musketeers 14 field goals in the first half were three-pointers.
The team traded baskets over the first few minutes of the second before Xavier reeled off 10 straights points to open a 57-27 lead with 15:24 remaining in the contest. A layup from Jones and a three from Brown got the Tigers back within 64-39 but Xavier again responded and built a 34-point advantage, 80-46, with 3:51 left.
Ta'Shia Phillips led the Musketeers with 16 points and 15 rebounds and Xavier scored 35 points off Mizzou turnovers.
Mizzou opens Big 12 Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 8 against the No. 22 Texas Longhorns at 4 p.m. at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers then travel to Lubbock, Texas, on Wednesday, Jan. 12 for a matchup with the Texas Tech Red Raiders at 7 p.m.
