AMES, Iowa - The University of Missouri women's basketball team suffered a 71-56 loss to the No. 23/20 Iowa State Cyclones Saturday afternoon in Ames, Iowa. The Tigers fell to 10-11 overall and 2-5 in Big 12 play while the Cyclones improved to 15-5 and 3-3.
Senior Shakara Jones led the Tigers with 16 points, including 14 in the second half. The forward also added a team high seven rebounds. Senior RaeShara Brown narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and nine assists and junior Christine Flores added 12 points.
Iowa State jumped out to a quick 8-0 advantage just 1:30 into the contest. The Cyclones continued to shoot well from the floor and increased their lead to 17-4 with 15:35 remaining in the first half.
The Cyclones led by as many was 24, thanks in part to a 12-0, in the first half but Mizzou used two free throws by Jones and a fastbreak layup from senior RaeShara Brown for a 39-19 Iowa State halftime advantage.
Missouri's offense came out firing in the second frame but Iowa State kept pace as the Tigers tried to cut into their deficit. With the Cyclones leading 41-19, Jones reeled off eight straight points for Mizzou but Iowa State hit its shots to keep it a 20-point contest with 11:09 left in the contest.
A 9-1 run by Missouri got the squad within 13, 57-44, with 6:16 on the clock. The teams traded baskets until Brown made two free throws with 1:17 remaining in the game cut Iowa State's lead to 67-56. The Cyclones converted their freebies down the stretch to preserve the victory.
Missouri returns home to Mizzou Arena host consecutive games against Nebraska on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. and Kansas State on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. The contest against the Huskers on Wednesday will recognize National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Before the game, Mizzou female student-athletes from other sports will sign autographs on the north concourse.
