COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's basketball team used a 15-0 second half run to propel the team to a convincing 66-52 victory over Border Showdown foe Kansas Wednesday night at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers improved to 10-10 overall and 2-4 in Big 12 play while the Jayhawks fell to 14-6 and 1-6.
With Missouri clinging to a 48-47 lead with just over seven minutes left in the contest, senior RaeShara Brown nailed a jumper to kick off a 15-0 Tiger run over the next four and a half minutes. Senior Jasmyn Otote, junior BreAnna Brock and sophomore Sydney Crafton all scored during the stretch, as Mizzou stretched its advantage to 63-47 with 2:52 remaining in the game.
Kansas never managed to get closer than 13 points in the final minutes, as Missouri held on for the 66-52 victory.
Brown scored a game high 22 points and dished out six assists to lead the Tigers. She was joined in double figures by Brock, who had 12 points and eight rebounds, and senior Shakara Jones, who added 11 points and eight boards.
The score went back and forth over the first few minutes until the Jayhawks used a 9-0 run to take a 22-14 advantage with 9:43 left in the first frame. Brock and Brown each hit layups to cut Mizzou's deficit to 22-18 but Kansas' Angel Goodrich nailed a three to put the visitors back up seven, 25-18, with 7:43 remaining.
A jumper from Brock jumpstarted a 12-0 Missouri run as the Tigers clawed their way back to take a 30-25 lead. After Brock got Mizzou within three, she found a cutting Brown, who hit a layup and made the ensuing free throw to knot the score at 25-25. Brown then returned the favor and assisted a Brock basket as Missouri claimed its first lead of the game, 27-25, with 3:53 on the clock.
The Tigers extended their lead to 30-25 after Brown nabbed a steal, drove the length of the floor and converted an old fashioned three-point play with 2:29 remaining in the frame. Kansas used a layup from Marisha Brown to close out first half scoring for a 30-27 Missouri lead at the break.
A three-pointer from sophomore Trenee Thornton gave Mizzou a 37-29 advantage with 16:59 left in the contest. But the Jayhawks would not go away and chipped away at Missouri's lead until a trey from Angel Goodrich knotted the score at 41-41 with 12:34 remaining. The score remained close until Mizzou reeled off the 15-0 run five minutes later.
The Tigers had a 41-30 rebounding advantage in the game and outscored the Jayhawks 15-1 in second chance opportunities.
Mizzou travels to Ames, Iowa, on Saturday, Jan. 29 to face the No. 23/20 Iowa State Cyclones at 2 p.m. The Tigers then return to Mizzou Arena for a pair of contest next week, as the team faces the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. and the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m.
