
Mizzou Falls At Kansas State, 66-63

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Senior RaeShara Brown scored a career high 33 points but the University of Missouri women's basketball team suffered a 66-63 defeat to the Kansas State Wildcats Wednesday night in Manhattan, Kan. Mizzou fell to 9-9 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 Conference play while the Wildcats improved to 12-5 and 2-2.
Brown shot 12-of-19 from the field to score her 33 points, Mizzou's first 30-point outing since EeTisha Riddle notched 31 against Wyoming during the 2006-07 season. The guard also recorded four assists and four steals. Senior Shakara Jones notched 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while junior Christine Flores had 11 points.
The Tigers ran out to a quick 15-9 advantage just over five minutes into the contest as Brown hit her first five shots from the floor. Kansas State began to chip away at Mizzou's lead, eventually using a 9-2 run to take an 18-17 edge with 6:43 remaining in the opening frame.
Seven straight points for the Tigers over the next two minutes put the visitors back on top 24-18 but the Wildcats again responded with a 13-2 run as Kansas State opened a 31-26 advantage with 1:01 left in the opening half. Brown drove to the hoop and hit a layup with 21 seconds remaining and the Wildcats could not convert on their last possession for a 31-28 Kansas State halftime lead. In the opening 20 minutes, Brown hit 7-of-9 shots from the floor for 18 of Mizzou's 28 points.
Kansas State opened up a six-point advantage, 39-33, early in the second frame after two free throws from Chantay Caron with 15:02 on the clock. However, the Tigers scored the games' next six points to knot the score at 39-39 with 12:43 left in the contest. Flores had four of Mizzou's six points during the stretch, including two freebies.
With Kansas State ahead 43-42, Brown drove to the basket and made a reverse layup to give the Tigers their first lead of the second half, 44-43, with 9:52 remaining in the game. The score seesawed back and forth over the next few minutes until the Wildcats scored on consecutive possessions to take a 51-46 advantage with 5:51 on the clock.
The Tigers went cold from the floor over the next few minutes and Kansas State increased its advantage to 56-47 with just under two minutes left in the game. Two free throws from Kelsey Hill gave the Wildcats an eight-point lead, 59-51, with 59 seconds left but senior Jasmyn Otote converted a three-point play with 39 seconds on the clock to get Mizzou with 59-54.
Kansas State hit its free throws down the stretch to maintain its lead. Brown sank a halfcourt shot as time expired for the 66-63 final score. Jalana Childs led the Wildcats with 21 points.
Mizzou stays on the road for a game against the Colorado Buffaloes (10-7, 1-3 Big 12) on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 4 p.m. MT (5 p.m. CT) in Boulder, Colo.
