COLUMBIA, Mo.- - Missouri picked up its ninth-straight win over Nebraska and swept the Huskers for the third-consecutive season as it took a 6-5 victory in Sunday's series finale at Taylor Stadium. It was the Tigers' first three-game sweep of a Big 12 Conference opponent since last year's series with the Cornhuskers.
With the victory, the Tigers improve to 27-22 on the season and 10-13 in the Big 12 Conference, while Nebraska falls to 23-27 overall and 7-17 in the league.
Sunday's contest was scoreless through the first five innings before each team put a run on the board in the sixth. Nebraska plated the first run of the game when Adam Bailey doubled and scored on a single by Cody Asche in the top of the sixth.
Mizzou pulled even as junior Jonah Schmidt led off the bottom of the sixth inning by connecting on his seventh home run of the season. Schmidt drove in his second run of the game in the seventh inning with an RBI double to put the Tigers in front.
Schmidt's seventh-inning double was followed by a two-run double by sophomore Conner Mach. That was Mach's second double of the game and he added a single in the second inning to finish the game 3-for-4. Mach, who had not had an at-bat since April 6 before getting the start on Saturday and Sunday, was 5-for-5 in his two games played this weekend, with two doubles and three RBI.
With Missouri leading 6-1 after seven innings, the Huskers attempted a comeback by plating three runs in the top of the eighth, with all three scoring on a home run by Cody Burleson. They added a run in the ninth as four batters in the inning were hit by a pitch before junior Brad Buehler struck out Burleson with the bases loaded to close out the game.
Sophomore Jeff Emens got the start on the mound for the Tigers and turned in a career long 5.2 innings pitched, allowing one run on seven hits. Junior Tyler Clark picked up his second win of the season after pitching 1.1 innings in relief. Buehler recorded the save, his first of the season and the ninth of his career.
Missouri will close out the regular season next weekend with a three-game series with Texas. Game one of the series is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, with games to follow at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
