Head Coach Gary Pinkel
Opening statement...
"I think there is a lot of things that need to take place between now and kickoff against Illinois but I think we've got the makings of a very good football team. We've got to keep going, we've got a good freshman class coming in. There is still a lot of competition. I told them we set the depth going in to August for our first practice but when we start that first practice all the jobs are open again and it's all based on competition. I think there's a lot of things in place. "
On James Franklin...
"I think James did a lot of good things all spring. As quarterback you go through a learning process and I think going out there against the 1's and having that experience he will learn. You're going to learn from the good things and the mistakes you made. But there is still great competition there. There is no decisions made there in anyway and competition makes a better football team."
Player Quotes
Derrick Washington:
On losing weight during the offseason...
"I lost six pounds, and I feel lighter now on my feet."
On offense...
"We kind of struggled at the beginning. We had two bad drives and then we started to pick up the tempo a little bit and things started clicking. I'm looking forward to us doing that and once we get a big play we get the offense going.
On Blaine wearing the green jersey and whether he would have scored...
"I believe he would have scored that touchdown. The guy, I believe it was Kenji Jackson, he barely even tagged him, Blaine would have been gone, it was easily a touchdown.
On what he is looking forward to in off season...
"We are going to work hard and get stronger. We have 7 on 7's by ourselves, trying to get better and correct the little things that we need to do. Getting ready for summer ball.
Aldon Smith:
On the secondary....
"Once the pieces come back together, I mean Jacquies is hurt obviously, that will help us quite a bit."
On confidence this year compared to this time last year...
"It's all about improvement, and as you can see, I think we improved from last spring to this spring. I thought we looked really good today. We all looked good."
On scrimmage in the first half...
"It caught me off guard at first. I was kind of wondering who to cheer for. I'm a defensive guy cheering for the offense."
On defense getting first points on the board...
"It was good. I mean as defense you want to try to score points yourselves so us getting on the board was good. I liked it."
Kevin Rutland:
On thoughts of the game...
"I think it went pretty good. Offense had a slow start. I mean it's up and down, that's how games are. Defense came out on fire, I'm on defense so I loved that. We got a lot better through spring ball and I'm excited about it."
On experience coming back this year compared to last...
"I was impressed, especially with the secondary. We have myself, Carl Gettis, Kip Edwards, guys like that all coming back even Jasper Simmons for the safeties. You can't ask for a better situation for the secondary so I think it will prove well for us throughout the season."
On Madison getting a touchdown...
"He's gotten a lot better. He is the most improved d-lineman so he's really upped his game. He has proved he can really play at that higher level with the Jacquies and Aldon."
On changes made to cornerback that makes it more fun...
"It's just a more aggressive style of cornerback, we're not waiting on as many things."
T.J. Moe:
On today's game...
"I wasn't really nervous. I got the jitters out. I've been fighting the ball a little bit the past week or so and finally Blaine was like 'quit fighting' and I did so I started catching the ball.
Blaine Gabbert:
On getting some running in today's game...
"Yeah my ankle is feeling good. I rehabbed hard all winter, it was bothering me a majority of last year, but I think it's back to 100%. It was good to run today and I thought I got a touchdown but I guess I got tagged.
On return to old Blaine...
"It was fun just getting back out here. We had a good scrimmage but it was more for the fans and the younger players , kind of give a preview of the 2010 Tigers. There are some things we can work on, a lot of little things. There was some miscommunication on some plays, had some wrong routes and a few dropped balls, but everyone can get better after the scrimmage."
On the team being in a good place...
"Oh yeah. It's fun, going out and scoring some points. Whenever you score points you're having fun, that's what we're supposed to do."
On interacting with the kids...
"It's a blast, signing autographs and taking pictures. I'll stay here as long as they're here."
