SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Senior Shannon Leinert (Eureka, Mo.) automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships after claiming the women's 800m run title with a personal-best clocking of 2:04.32 as the Mizzou track and field program wrapped up competition at the 23rd Annual Meyo Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 6). Leinert's time is currently the second-best time in the nation this season and ranks her second all-time on Mizzou's indoor 800m performance list. Three additional Tigers also set NCAA qualifying marks on the final day of competition as well.
Although Leinert highlighted the day for the middle-distance runners, the Tiger men also made a mark in the 800m run as a pair of individuals set NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the event. Aaron Dixon (Lee's Summit, Mo.) clocked a personal-best time of 1:49.90 to place sixth in the event while teammate Rick Scheff (Atlanta, Ga.) finished just behind him in ninth with a 1:50.44 clocking as both added their names to the list of NCAA provisional qualifiers.
Senior Lana Mims (Tulsa, Okla.) also met the NCAA provisional standard for the Tigers, doing so in the 400m dash. She posted a personal-best time of 54.62 to earn fourth-place overall in the event. Her previous personal-best in the event came last weekend and she shaved nearly a second-and-a-half off of that time this week. Mims also set a personal-best in the long jump during day one as she finished sixth in the event yesterday.
The Tiger men also saw plenty of success in the shot put as they took two of the top three spots in the event, highlighted by a second-place finish by senior Andy Oaker (Steelville, Mo.). Oaker turned in a toss of 17.23m (56-6 ½) while teammate Corey Jones (Boonville, Mo.) finished just behind him in second place after measuring in at 16.97m (55-8 ¼). Chris Holly (Topeka, Kan.) was the Tigers' top finisher in the weight throw after tossing 18.05m (59-2 ¾), a season-best in the event. Freshman Katie Evans (Powersville, Mo.) highlighted the throws for the Tiger women as she finished seventh in the women's shot put with a throw of 14.89m (48-10 ¼).
Back on the track, the Tiger middle-distance runners continued to see success in the mile run. Senior Michael Barrows (Flint, Mich.) turned in a seventh-place finish after clocking a time of 4:08.03, just missing the provisional standard. Classmate Angela Potrykus (Evergreen, Colo.) was the women's top finisher in the mile with a 4:51.92 clocking, a personal-best in the event.
After finishing fourth in yesterday's 300m dash, Clifton Leake (Dallas, Texas) returned to the track on Saturday and was Mizzou's top finisher in the 400m dash after clocking in at 48.55, a personal-best in the event.
After claiming the nation's second-best heptathlon mark at last weekends' Bill Bergan Invitational, senior Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) had another fine meet at the Meyo Invitational. Adcock clocked in at 8.07 in the 60m hurdles, earning him eighth overall, and he just missed setting a personal-best in the long jump after leaping 7.18m (23-6 ¾) to place ninth overall. He also ran as the second leg of the men's 4x400m relay team that placed 11th overall with a time of 3:13.63, a season-best for the foursome and just shy of NCAA provisional mark.
Freshman pole vaulter Heather Green (Jefferson City, Mo.) had a fine meet as well, setting a personal-best height of 3.70m (12-1 ½) to earn 12th overall.
Mizzou will return to action next weekend as they will take part in the Iowa State Classic in what will be its second of three trips to Ames during the indoor season. For all the latest on Mizzou athletics, stay tuned to MUTigers.com.
