COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri Tigers crowned seven winners on the first day of the 10th annual Missouri Relays, but due to the threat of unfavorable conditions for Saturday, the second day's events have been cancelled.
With forecasts showing rain, ice and snow for all day Saturday, track and field head coach Dr. Rick McGuire informed the teams that conditions in and around the Midwest would not bode well for travel and competition.
"You can't control the weather, but we were able to get a lot of athletes the chance to compete and overall I think it was a very productive day," he said. "We wanted to make sure all the teams would be able to return home safely before any of the weather hit their respective areas."
Kaela Rorvig, Brian Hancock, Chris Rohr, Stacy Swineburg, Krishna Lee and Ryan Blackwell all took home top honors, while many other Tigers finished in the top five in many of the events on Friday.
Rohr has a regional qualifying throw in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 210 feet, 10 inches (64.27 meters).
Rorvig would be a two-event winner in both the women's 100-meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 14.20 seconds and the women's long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 3.25 inches (5.57 meters).
Lee's toss of 188 feet, 9 inches put her first in the women's hammer throw followed by Tigers Elisha Hunt and Melissa Coil. Swineburg took the women's high jump with the bar set at 5 feet, 3 inches (1.60 meters).
Hancock began his outdoor season on the right foot, taking first place in the pole vault with a leap of 16 feet, 0.75 inches (4.90 meters), while Blackwell took the top spot in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 21.85 seconds.
Mizzou will return to action next weekend in the second annual Jefferson Cup dual against the University of Virginia at Walton Stadium.
