TEMPE, Ariz. - - Missouri concluded its nine-game road trip to open the 2009 season by picking up a 5-2 win over Arizona State on Sunday in Tempe, Ariz. The win snaps a seven-game losing streak for the Tigers.
The game was called after eight innings due to travel arrangements. A three-hour time limit was placed on the game prior to first pitch.
Arizona State got on the board first with a run in the fourth inning, getting three-straight singles to start the inning. After a walk loaded the bases with no outs, Tepesch stuck out two and got a foul out to limit the damage.
Missouri (2-7) took the lead by plating two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Junior Aaron Senne and freshman Ben Turner opened the seventh with a pair of singles. Senne scored when senior Kyle Mach grounded into a double play. Senior Austin Holt pinch ran for Turner and scored the go ahead run on a single by junior Michael Liberto.
The Sun Devils (8-1) tied the score by plating a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Mizzou regained the lead with three runs in the top of the eighth, getting one run on a double by senior Ryan Lollis and scoring twice on junior Trevor Coleman's second home run of the season.
Sophomore Nick Tepesch struck out a career high eight batters in 6.1 innings pitched. He allowed just one run on six hits, but took a no decision.
The win moves Mizzou Head Coach Tim Jamieson into second place on the all-time wins list at MU passing John "Hi" Simmons. Jamieson holds a record of 482-336-2 in his 15 years as the Tigers' skipper.
Mizzou will return to Columbia for its home opener at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Western Illinois. That game is the first of a six-game homestand to open the home portion of the Tigers' schedule.
