TEMPE, Ariz. - - Missouri fell to Northern Illinois, 5-2, on Saturday at the DeMarini Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The loss is the seventh in the row for the Tigers, who drop to 1-7 on the season.
After Northern Illinois put a run on the board in the top of the first, the Tigers answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, getting back-to-back RBI singles from freshman Ben Turner and junior Aaron Senne.
However, those two runs were the last scored by Mizzou on Saturday.
The Huskies tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth, then took the lead with a run in the sixth inning. They extended the lead to three by scoring twice in the eighth.
"We are just not playing well enough to win in any area," Head Coach Tim Jamieson. "We did some good things, but we are just playing bad enough to lose. We just have to keep fighting. That's all you can do."
Sophomore Kelly Fick struck out five in his second start of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits and tying a career high with six innings pitched.
Senne had two hits against NIU, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Michael Liberto also recorded a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
The Tigers will wrap up their season-opening nine-game, 11-day road trip on Sunday as they take on Arizona State at 2:30 p.m. (central time). On Wednesday, Mizzou will take on Western Illinois at Taylor Stadium in its home opener.
