College Station, Texas. - After her performance on Friday, Shannon Leinert showed why she was tops in the 800-meter run. But trailing in the final lap, Leinert would storm back, and overtake Gladys Kipsang for the title in the final day of the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
More than 3700 people would see Leinert finish with a time of 2:07.95, an NCAA qualifying mark making this the third year in a row that Mizzou has taken the women's 800-meter run, with the last being Trisa Nickoley who won the event three times and in back-to-back seasons.
"This is my first time in the Big 12 Conference, so winning today was really exciting," Leinert said. "Although I knew coming in that I was ranked first, there is a lot of self-pressure that you put on yourself, but I am excited for nationals and I hope I can get the best time out of me."
Leinert would not be the only Tiger having a historic day, heptathlon athletes Nick Adcock and Lars Rise would put up astounding numbers in the heptathlon and Krishna Lee would remain among the top throwers in the country in the shot put.
Adcock and Rise would finish second and fourth in a competetive heptathlon race, ending the day with NCAA qualifying 5747 and 5639 points respectively. The marks are some of the best in the country and both should have strong showings at nationals.
Krishna Lee, who finished third in the women's weight throw on Friday, did the same today finishing third in the shot put, coming in with another national qualifying throw of 52-02.25 (15.92 meters). She would finish behind Texas' Jordyn Brown and Texas Tech's Patience Knight who threw an automatic 56-2 (17.12 meters). Andy Oaker finished fifth in the shot put, throwing 56-07.25 (17.25 meters).
"All of the hard work that the team put into this indoor season showed this weekend," head coach Dr. Rick McGuire said. "We competed with some of the best athletes in the world, and put everything we had into this meet."
The Tigers would be well represented in the 1000-meter run as Aaron Dixon would finish third with a time of 2:25.03, while Elen Ries would finish in sixth place with a time of 2:52.07.
In the 600-yard run, Chris Davis will have a lot to look forward to in years to come, finishing in third place with a time of 1:09.89, while Leslie Farmer finished in a time of 1:22.58 giving her fifth place in event.
