
Tigers Sweep SIUE to Close Non-Conference Schedule

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri volleyball team (7-6 Overall, 1-2 Big 12) took a quick break from conference play to host the SIU Edwardsville Cougars (2-6) Saturday night. The Tigers swept the Cougars, who are in its first year of reclassification from NCAA Division II to Division I, in just over an hour's time, 25-8, 25-21, 25-22. Julianna Klein (Keota, Iowa) scored three aces on night and a total of 16 points in scoring 11 kills and adding two solo blocks.
Right behind Klein, Amanda Hantouli (Omaha, Neb.) had 10 points and the team's highest hitting percent, .571, with nine kills and only one error on 14 attempts.
The team digs leader was Caitlyn Vann with 13 throughout the three sets. Vann and Megan Wilson added two aces apiece as part of the team's eight tally.
Lei Wang spread 36 assists, adding six digs and an ace.
Sydney Winslow led SIUE with 15 kills. Mallory Clements had an impressive 23 assists and eight digs.
The Tigers opened the game 6-0. The first point of the game came from an ace from Megan Wilson (Lincoln, Nebraska). Juliana Klein opened with three points (2 kills, 1 block). A quick time out was called by SIUE. Mizzou returned to the court taking the game 10-0 before the first Cougar point. SIUE scored 3 quick points taking the set to 10-3. The Tigers then took the game back into their hands going up 14-4. In that time Weinwen Wang (Nanjing, China) posted 3 kills. The Tigers then went on a 6-2 run with 2 points coming off two aces by Klein taking the score to 21-6. Mizzou easily wrapped up the set, handling the Cougars 25-8. Klein put an impressive eight points followed by M. Wilson tallying four, both had two aces. The Tigers tallied a .500 hitting percentage in the first frame, 14-4-24.
The second set looked like SIUE had swung some momentum opening the set 0-2. The Tigers quickly took back command bringing the score to 3-2 including an impressive block from Klein. The Cougars managed to put the put on a show 5-2 run taking the score to 5-7. Neither team managed much momentum and the teams traded points until the 10-10 mark. Mizzou looked to have gained some of their spark back with an impressive block from W. Wang and Catie Wilson (Omaha, Nebraska) making the score 13-11. The Cougars evened the set back up at 14-14. Mizzou then took the set to 17-14 and forced SIUE to call a timeout. Both teams continued to battle back and forth until Mizzou called a timeout at 21-19. The Tigers failed to capitalize on their first set point but finally closed out the set 25-21. Sydney Winslow (Farmington, Mo.) from SIUE was responsible for moth of their points giving the Cougars 7.5 in the second set. Hantouli boasted a .778 hitting percentage through the first two sets leading the Tigers.
Mizzou started the third set strong scoring the first two points. The Cougars and Tigers then continued to dual back and forth like in the second set. At the 4-4 mark Mizzou looked to be gaining control going up 6-4 but SIUE quickly went on 4-0 run and forcing the Tigers to take a timeout. The Cougars continued their run out of the timeout going 3-1 taking the score to 7-11. The Tigers finally broke through with three big points coming from Klein bringing the game to tie at 13-13. Klein gave the Tigers their first lead since the 6-5 mark. SIUE and Mizzou continued to trade points until a timeout called by SIUE. At the timeout the Tigers had taken the set to 17-15. Once again neither team could game dominance and traded points. Mizzou finally went on a 3-0 run until the Cougars called time. The Cougars managed two quick points out of the time out but after an error the Tigers were at set point. Fittingly Klein served the final point making the Tiger's win 25-22.
The Tigers face off against the Iowa State Cyclones at home on Wednesday at 6:30. The Cyclones entered the night at 9-5 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play, hosting Nebraska this evening.
