FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Saturday was the final day of the NCAA Track & Field Mideast Regional in Fayetteville, Ark., with many from the University of Missouri competing. Junior Chris Rohr (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and senior Jason Morris (St. Louis, Mo.) earned an automatic ticket to Des Moines, Iowa, for the upcoming NCAA Championships via top-five finishes in the men's hammer throw. In addition, several Tigers placed themselves in good positions to receive an at-large national selection.
Rohr placed third with a personal-best throw of 220 feet, 10 inches (67.30m) on his fifth attempt. His mark also eclipsed the USATF Olympic Team Trials `B' standard and places him among the top-10 marks made by collegians this season. Rohr struggled early, fouling his first two throws before using a "safety" throw of 201-3 (61.35m) to squeeze into the last spot in the finals. Sitting in ninth, Rohr popped his best of the day to move to second. Auburn's Jake Dunkleberger would pass Rohr in the same round with a 222-6 (67.81m) to move the Tiger to third.
Morris placed fifth overall with a final-round toss of 213-11 (65.21m). Auburn's Cory Martin, the national leader, won for the second-straight year with a meet record 239-10 (73.11m).
Mizzou senior Tyler Dailey (Joplin, Mo.) placed himself in the at-large selection pool with a personal best mark of 208-9 (63.64m) on his first attempt to make the finals and place ninth.
Sophomore Brian Hancock (Monroe City, Mo.) placed seventh in the men's pole vault, clearing 17-1 (5.21m). Hancock is a strong candidate to earn an at-large selection to the NCAA meet based on his 17-5 (5.31m) season's best a few weeks ago.
Senior Shernelle Nicholls (St. Andrew's Parrish, Barbados) and junior Krishna Lee (Kansas City, Mo.) has appeared to lock up at-large bids in the women's shot put. Lee's 10th-place showing and Nicholls' 11th-place finish this afternoon kept them eligible for at-large consideration. Senior Elizabeth Robe placed 12th with a season's best of 49-7 (15.11m).
In today's track finals, senior Trisa Nickoley finished eighth in the women's 800. Nickoley fell in the final turn and Mizzou protest citing that Nickoley had possibly been fouled. The protest was denied namely because of the lack of video evidence. Senior Tipper O'Brien took 10th in the final of the men's 1500.
In final team scoring, the Tiger men finished 18th with 12 points. LSU won the day with 88.
The final list of those accepted for the NCAA Championships will be released Wednesday, June 4. The NCAA Championships will be held June 11-14 in Des Moines.
