COLUMBIA, Mo. - - Mizzou fell to Western Illinois by a score of 5-3 on Wednesday night at Taylor Stadium, dropping its third-consecutive game. It is the first three-game losing streak for the Tigers since dropping three straight March 25-30 of 2007.
Western Illinois scored three times in the top of the second inning, getting RBI singles from Zach Berg and Kyle Suprenant. Two of the three runs scored in the second were unearned as a pair of Tiger errors aided WIU in the inning.
In the third inning, Drew Laidig tripled and then scored on a passed ball to make it a four-run lead for the Leathernecks. The lead was stretched for five after Berg led off the fourth with a single and later in the frame scored on a sacrifice fly.
The Tigers cut into the Western Illinois lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, loading the bases and getting a two-out single from junior Ryan Lollis to drive in a pair of runners.
Missouri (20-6) scored once in the ninth as sophomore Greg Folgia drew a lead off walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Aaron Senne. Lollis drew a two-out walk in the ninth and sophomore Trevor Coleman was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Mizzou could not push any additional runs across.
Mizzou junior Ryan Gargano pitched a career-long 5.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out four. Senior Lee Fischer had a career-best three hits, finishing 3-for-4 on the night.
WIU (5-14) starter Ben Percival allowed just one run on six hits in 6.1 innings on the mound and struck out seven.
Missouri will take on Lincoln at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Taylor Stadium.
