MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - - No. 2 Mizzou scored five runs in the top of the first inning, but were outscored 12-0 the remainder of the game, as Minnesota defeated the Tigers 12-5 on Wednesday at The Metrodome in Minneapolis. The loss snaps MU's 14-game winning streak and drops the Tigers to 19-3 on the year. The 12 runs were the most allowed by Mizzou this season.
The first five batters of the game reached safely for Missouri, including senior Jacob Priday whose grand slam put the Tigers up 4-0. It was Priday's fifth home run of the year and the 38th of his career. He moves into a tie for third with Griffin Moore on the career home runs list at MU.
Junior Ryan Lollis followed Priday's grand slam with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Steve Gray to give Missouri the five-run lead.
Minnesota began to cut into the Mizzou lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning and added another run in the third inning. The first three runs for the Gophers were all unearned as the Tigers made an error in both the second and third innings. They finished with a season-high four errors in the game.
The Gophers tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth, which included a double by Nate Hudson to drive in a run. They pulled ahead with a two-run sixth inning, getting four hits in the frame and a five-run bottom of the seventh put the Gophers up by seven. Minnesota collected five hits in the seventh inning, including a two-run triple by Eric Decker.
Junior Rick Zagone, who had not made an appearance on the mound since March 9, nursing a sore shoulder, allowed three runs, all of which were unearned, on five hits in three innings of work.
Missouri returns to Big 12 Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. Game one of the series is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
