COLUMBIA, Mo. - Indiana scored the last six points to record a 63-54 win over the Missouri women's basketball team on Tuesday night at Mizzou Arena. Junior Jessra Johnson notched her second consecutive double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to go along with a career high five assists and four steals. Senior Alyssa Hollins led the Tigers with 16 points.
The loss drops Missouri to 1-3 on the season while Indiana improves to 2-2.
"Indiana is a very good, quality team," Missouri Head Coach Cindy Stein said. "The key to our game was rebounding, some defensive mishaps and we've got to get more scoring coming from other people. Our goal right now is just to keep getting better."
The Tigers jumped out to a 10-5 lead with 13:54 left in the first after Hollins nailed two three-pointers and Johnson found junior Amanda Hanneman under the basket for a wide-open layup.
A trey from Indiana's Haylie Linn with 7:34 left in the first stanza capped a 20-4 run over a 6:20 span to give the Hoosiers an 11-point lead, 25-14.
Mizzou came roaring back with a 13-5 run of their own, including a three from redshirt freshman Bekah Mills, a breakaway layup from sophomore RaeShara Brown after grabbing a steal and a jumper from Johnson, to cut Indiana's lead to five, 30-27, with 55 seconds remaining in the first. After Hoosier Jamie Braun made one of two free throws, Hollins was fouled with 2.7 seconds left in the half and converted one of her two opportunities for a 31-28 Indiana halftime lead.
Indiana scored the first six points of the second half to go up 37-28 but Mizzou hit consecutive baskets to bring its deficit back down to four, 37-33, with 17:16 left in the contest. With the Tigers still down by four, 41-37, Hollins sank another three-pointer off an assist from freshman Bailey Gee to cut the margin to one, 41-40, with 11:26 remaining.
Johnson tied up the contest, 45-45, with 8:47 on the clock when she made a layup and converted the ensuing free throw. However, the Hoosiers used a 10-1 run to go up by nine, 55-46, at the 5:01 mark.
A jumper from Hollins with 2:13 left got the Tigers back within three, 57-54, but Indiana recorded the final six points of the contest for the 63-54 victory.
Brown recorded eight rebounds for the Tigers and sophomore Shakara Jones added nine points.
Mizzou next travels to Evanston, Ill., to compete in the DoubleTree White Invitational. On Saturday, Nov. 29, the Tigers will face the Holy Cross Crusaders at Noon before a 3 p.m. contest against host Northwestern on Sunday, Nov. 30. Following the tournament, Missouri returns to Mizzou Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 3 for a matchup with Toledo at 6:30 p.m.
