COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Big 12 Conference announced on Wednesday that two members of the University of Missouri Swimming and Diving squad were named as the league's swimmer and diver of the month. Redshirt sophomore Cameron Sellers was named Swimmer of the Month for the men, while freshman Jordan Morcom was named as the women's diver of the month. It is the first conference accolade for both Tigers.
Morcom shined during her first week of her collegiate career, capping off an already impressive week by sweeping both the 1-meter (269.90) and 3-meter (294.95) against No. 9 Texas A&M. The following day, Morcom teamed with senior Kendra Melnychuk at the Big 12 Relays, where the duo would take gold in the 3-meter (297.90) and earn a runner-up finish in the 1-meter (274.85). To open the season, the Grapevine, Texas, native scored the most points in the 1-meter team scramble, helping the women take gold in the event.
On the men's side, Sellers has already won three events on the young season. The Valley Center, Kan., native touched first in the 200 free (1:42.12) and 500 free (4:45.34) in Missouri's 143.5-90.5 victory over No. 18 Texas A&M. The redshirt sophomore also added another victory in the 500 free (4:32.74) at the Show Me Showdown.
He also took second in the backstroke (51.63) at the Show Me Showdown, and was a member of the runner-up 300 back relay (2:32.81), 800 free relay (6:53.90) 1500 free relay (14:22.80) squads at the Big 12 Relays last week, helping the men take second-place for just the second time in the event's history.
Morcom and the women will be return to action at home this Saturday, when they take on rival Kansas at 2 p.m. CT in a Border Showdown battle in Columbia.
Sellers and the men will be back in action next Friday, Nov. 7, when they travel to Carbondale, Ill., to take on Southern Illinois.
