AMES, Iowa - The Missouri volleyball team (10-11, 4-7 Big 12) dropped a three-setter to Iowa State (13-9, 6-5 Big 12) Saturday afternoon, falling 25-18, 25-15, 25-20. The Tigers were held to a conference-season low .098 hitting percentage as the Cyclone serve that produced seven aces stifled MU. The Tigers and Cyclones split the season series as MU won the October 1 contest in Columbia.
The Tigers were led by sophomores Weiwen Wang and Catie Wilson who both contributed seven kills apiece.
Lei Wang scored a double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs and co-led Mizzou, along with Amanda Hantouli and Catie Wilson, in connecting on three blocks.
Caitlyn Vann notched 16 digs in leading the Tigers in the category.
Mizzou has now lost five-straight matches that start before 5 p.m.
Iowa State, who upset No. 13 Kansas State Wednesday, has now won six of its last seven matches, and was led Saturday by Victoria Henson's 15 kills.
Despite scoring the first two points of the match off a Klein kill and Hantouli solo block, the Tigers found themselves in a 6-2 hole after the Cyclones scored six-straight off the serve of Victoria Henson. Mizzou responded with a service run by Vann that included an ace, a Weiwen kill and a Wang-Wang double-block to tie the score at 6-6. ISU had another four-point run with four kills to go up 10-6. Although the Tigers came again within one at 10-9, and again at 12-11, Iowa State scored three straight to put the score to 15-11 and force a Mizzou timeout. Following the timeout, ISU would score five of the next six, three off Mizzou hitting errors and one off an ace to virtually seize the game at 20-12. The Tigers would attempt a comeback, scoring four straight after another timeout, but ISU closed the set with a 5-2 run to win 25-18. Mizzou was outhit .263 to .135 in the opening stanza as Weiwen Wang led the Tigers with four kills.
A four-point run that included two aces from Rachel Hockaday gave ISU an 11-5 lead in the second, and, from there, the Cyclones didn't have to look back as they would go on to hit .400 in the frame, holding Mizzou to just seven kills and an .032 average to take the set easily, 25-15. Henson would score eight kills by herself for the Cyclones in the set.
The Tigers capitalized on three-consecutive hitting errors by Iowa State to take a 9-7 lead, but ISU would go on a 5-1 run, full of kills an another ace to take control of the set at 12-10. The Tigers struggled to find any momentum as they would sideout only twice more on the way to 20-14. Mizzou would manage a 5-1 run of its own to force an Iowa State timeout at 21-17, but ISU was able to close the book on the match with a kill by Debbie Stadick.
The Tigers' next contest will be at Kansas, Wednesday.
