WACO, Texas-- - Missouri put up its highest run total against a Big 12 Conference opponent in over two years by defeating Baylor 14-11 in game two of their series in Waco, Texas. The Tigers scored nine runs in the fourth inning and got home runs from a pair of freshmen to take a 2-0 lead in the three-game set. They will go for the sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Mizzou improves to 9-5 in the Big 12 Conference and remains tied with Oklahoma State for second place in the league standings. The Tigers are 28-11 overall, while Baylor falls to 21-19 on the year and 6-11 in conference play.
Baylor led 7-3 after three innings before the Tigers scored the next 11 runs of the game, including a nine-run fourth inning. Mizzou sent 13 batters to the plate in the fourth, tallying seven hits in the inning. Junior Jacob Priday and freshman Aaron Senne each had two hits in the fourth, with Senne's second hit being a three-run home run, his second round-tripper of the season.
The nine runs is the most runs scored in one inning by MU since an 11-run second inning against Mississippi Valley State on May 6, 2006 and is its highest-scoring inning against a Big 12 team since putting 17 runs on the board in the second inning against Texas Tech on April 1, 2005. Mizzou's 14 runs on Saturday are the most against a Big 12 team since scoring 25 in that meeting with TTU.
Senne drove in a career-high four runs on Saturday night, finishing 3-for-4 and extending his hitting streak to eight games, which matches the longest streak of the season for the Tigers.
Priday and junior Evan Frey also had three-hit games on Saturday.
Baylor scored in each of the first three innings, including a four-run first inning in which the Bears got RBI doubles from Matt Sodolak and Dustin Dickerson and a RBI single from Shaver Hansen.
Missouri answered with three runs in the top of the second inning. The first four batters for the Tigers in the second recorded hits, with the first three going for extra bases. Priday led off with a triple and scored on a double by Senne. Freshman Trevor Coleman followed with his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot over the wall in left centerfield.
The Bears scored twice in the second inning and added a run in the bottom of the third before Missouri put up the nine-run fourth inning.
Each team would score twice in the fifth and Baylor added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut it to a three-run lead, but would get no closer.
Mizzou starter, sophomore Rick Zagone, matched his shortest outing of the season, allowing six runs on six hits in two innings on the mound. Freshman Greg Folgia (3-3) relieved Zagone and took the win after pitching 4.2 innings.
Freshman Kyle Gibson pitched the final two innings and recorded his seventh save of the year, which ties him for seventh in the Mizzou record books for saves in a season.
The Tigers clinch their six series wins in their seven three-game series this season and have won four of their five Big 12 series. They will attempt to complete their fourth sweep of the season tomorrow.
Missouri's final game in Waco will get underway at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Following the Baylor series, the Tigers will face Kansas at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Next weekend, Mizzou returns to Taylor Stadium to host Texas Tech in a three-game set, which will open at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
