Tempe, Ariz.. - The Tiger softball team fell to 17-12 on the season after suffering only their second shutout of the campaign, 6-0, to third-ranked Arizona State (26-2) at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. One of four teams competing in the Pac 10/Big 12 Challenge, Missouri will close out the tournament in a Sunday game.
Junior pitcher Jen Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) made her second start of the tournament in the circle. Hurling five innings of work, Bruck gave up all seven of the Sun Devils hits and allowed four earned runs before being relieved by freshman Jana Hainey (Raymore, Mo.) in the top of the sixth inning. Hainey closed out the game for the Tigers and held Arizona State scoreless for the remainder of the game. The loss was Bruck's second on the season (6-2).
Only sophomore shortstop Andee Allen (Windsor, Mo.) was able to manage a hit off of 11-1 pitching ace Katie Burkhart. Allen ended Burkhart's no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single up the middle. This marks only the third time this season that the Tigers have been held to two or fewer hits in a single game.
Arizona State scored two runs in the first inning and four in the third to run away with the game. Together four Sun Devils combined for Arizona State's seven hits on the night.
