SURPRISE, Ariz.-- - Missouri dropped the finale of the Coca-Cola Classic to No. 10 Oregon State on Sunday, falling to the Beavers 9-2 in Surprise, Ariz.
Sunday's starting pitchers, freshman Kyle Gibson for MU and junior Daniel Turpen for OSU, were in control for the first three innings as Gibson faced just one over the minimum and Turpen just two more than the minimum through the first three frames.
Both teams broke through in the fourth, as each team put a run on the board, with Mizzou matching the Beavers run in the top of the inning with a run on three singles in the bottom half of the fourth. The third hit of the inning was a single by junior Dan Pietroburgo that drove in senior John McKee.
Oregon State put up three runs in the top of the fourth inning, two of which were unearned.
Mizzou (5-2) cut the lead to two as freshman Aaron Senne singled in the bottom of the sixth and later in the inning scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Gary Arndt.
OSU (9-1) quickly made it a three-run lead again as Mike Lissman led off the top of the seventh with a home run. The Beavers would add two more runs in the seventh inning.
Gibson, in his first start as a Tiger, went 4.2 innings, allowing four runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits. He struck out five, while walking one.
The Tigers had four players named to the Coca-Cola Classic All-Tournament Team, including sophomore Aaron Crow being named the Most Outstanding Pitcher. Senior Gary Arndt, sophomore Ryan Lollis and freshman Greg Folgia also earned spots on the All-Tournament squad.
