Columbia, Mo. -The Missouri softball team (3-3) registered a 12-1 win in five innings in the Tiger's home opener against UMKC (0-1) in the Dan Devine Pavilion. The first game of a double header, freshman lefty Jana Hainey (Raymore, Mo.) earned her first career win (1-2) beginning the game by striking out the side. Pitching three innings and allowing one run on one hit, Hainey faced 10 batters and struck out seven.
The Tigers took advantage of three UMKC errors in the second inning to score seven runs on five hits. Junior Amanda Renth (Mascoutah, Ill.) led off the inning sending a 1-2 pitch into left field where it was misplayed by leftfielder Lindsey Eaton, allowing Renth to advance to second base. Senior A.J. White (Tallmadge, Ohio) drove in Renth with a double of her own, registering her only RBI of the game. Senior Leanne Bowers (Arnold, Mo.) registered the first of her team-leading three RBI's in the second. Bowers drove in senior Ali Kennewell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) who walked earlier in the inning.
Using two walks and a wild pitch, the Tigers scored five runs in the third, putting the game out of reach for the Kangaroos. Bowers once again came up with a key hit in the third. Doubling to right center, she drove in Kennewell and junior Jen Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) who both walked earlier in the inning.
Third baseman Jackie Schuyler scored the only run for the Kangaroos in the second inning. Schuyler took a 3-2 pitch and knocked it over the right field wall for her first home run of the season.
Freshman Alaina Jacobson (Crocker, Mo.) relieved Hainey after the third inning. Jacobsen also pitched well allowing only one hit in two innings and striking out two UMKC batters. The win was the Tigers' first of the season by way of the eight run rule this season.
The double header will continue at 1 p.m. in the Dan Devine Pavilion.
