MIAMI, Fla. - Buoyed by three perfect innings of relief from freshman Kyle Gibson, the Mizzou baseball team is 3-0 for the first time since the 1999 campaign after a 3-2 win over Florida International on Sunday to complete the sweep of the season-opening series in Miami.
After the Panthers had scored in the sixth to pull within a run, junior Steven Mohr, who picked up the win on Saturday, retired the only batter he faced to end the inning and the threat. Gibson then wrapped up the game by retiring all nine batters he faced, including five by strikeout, to pick up his first save. Ian Berger picked up his first win with 1.2 innings of relief of starter John Thies.
Mizzou junior Evan Frey drew a walk to lead off the game and scored later in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ryan Lollis. The run in the first came without the benefit of a hit in the inning
After FIU scored a run in the bottom of the second inning to tie the score, the Tigers responded with two runs in the top of the third inning. Junior Brock Bond walked to open the inning and was followed by three-consecutive singles by senior John McKee, Lollis and junior Jacob Priday.
Lollis drove in his seventh run of the season as Bond scored on his single and then scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Aaron Senne.
The Golden Panthers cut the lead to one with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Next week, the Tigers head to Arizona for four games. Mizzou will take on Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. on Thursday at 8 p.m. CT before heading to Surprise, Ariz. for the Coca-Cola Classic Friday-Sunday.
