MIAMI, Fla.-- - The University of Missouri baseball team opened up the 2007 season with an impressive 12-6 win over Florida International in Miami on Friday night, giving MU Head Coach Tim Jamieson his 400th win at the helm of the Tigers.
Jamieson becomes just the third coach in MU history to record 400 career victories joining MU Hall of Fame coaches Gene McArtor (733 wins) and John "Hi" Simmons (481).
Three Tigers had three-hit games against FIU, including freshman Aaron Senne, who was 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored in his first game as a Tiger.
Senior Gary Arndt and junior Dan Pietroburgo each added three hits in the game as the Tigers compiled 14 hits, all singles, in the win.
Missouri (1-0) scored first, putting up three runs in the bottom of the second inning then took control of the game with a seven-run bottom of the seventh.
After junior Jacob Priday drew a lead off walk to start the second inning, Arndt, Pietroburgo and Senne each singled. Sophomore Kyle Mach followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in the third run.
FIU (1-2) got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second inning and cut the Tiger lead to one with a run in the bottom of the third. The leadoff hitter for the Golden Panthers singled and scored in both the second and third innings.
The Tigers took control of the game with a seven-run top of the seventh inning. MU sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, recorded four hits, drew three walks and was aided by an error to extend the lead to eight. Four of the runs were unearned after a two-out error allowed the inning to continue.
After a leadoff ground out to start the seventh, eight of the next nine batters all reached safely, with the lone Tiger not to reach being Priday, who drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
FIU got two runs back on a two-run home run by third baseman Bryan Pullin in the bottom of the seventh inning and added two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Sophomore Rick Zagone recorded the win for Missouri, allowing just two runs on seven hits, striking out five to pick up his seventh career win.
Freshman Kyle Gibson, sophomore Ian Berger and junior Lendsey Thomson pitched in relief for the Tigers, all making their first appearances on the mound as a Tiger.
The season opening series continues with games on Saturday and Sunday, first pitch set for 1 p.m. ET (Noon CT) both days. All Mizzou games can be heard on KTGR 1580-AM in Columbia and at KTGR.com.
