Coppin State's total of 38 points was the lowest production from a Missouri opponent since Arkansas Pine-Bluff lost 89-33 to the Tigers in Columbia way back on Dec. 9, 1998.
Missouri's 72-38 defeat of Coppin State was the second in as many seasons against the school from Baltimore, Maryland. A year ago, the Tigers defeated the Eagles 98-77 at Mizzou Arena.
Head Coach Mike Anderson shook up the starting line-up, giving forward Marshall Brown the nod over DeMarre Carroll. It was Brown's first start of the season. Guard J.T.Tiller--making the first start of his career--joined Keon Lawrence in the backcourt. Jason Horton and Stephon Hannah had been the starting guards each of the past five games. It was the first start Hannah has missed this season, and only the second of his Tiger career.
The new line-up propelled Missouri to an 8-0 early lead, and Missouri started the game on a 19-5 run.
With its 34-point win, Missouri has now won all eight of its home games by double digits.
Missouri held Coppin State to just 16 points in the first half, a season-low for any Missouri opponent this season. Previously, Western Illinois had mustered the season-low with 17 points in a Nov. 25 contest. CSU's 22-point second half was also a season-low for a Missouri opponent this season.
Coming off a 34.5 percent shooting night in a 59-58 loss against Illinois, Missouri shot 46.3 percent from the field. The Tigers were 17-22 (77.3 percent) from the foul line, after converting just 7 of 13 (54.5 percent) free throws against Illinois.
J.T. Tiller capitalized off his first career start, scoring 10 points. It was Tiller's second straight game in double figures; the sophomore also tallied 10 points against Illinois.
DeMarre Carroll finished one rebound shy of a double-double. He finished the night with 19 points on 7 for 8 shooting.
Missouri has won all 19 non-conference home games under Mike Anderson. Mizzou's non-conference home streak extends to 26, with the last loss coming in the 2005-2006 season opener against Sam Houston State. The streak is the longest since Tiger teams from 1987-1990 tacked up 27 consecutive non-conference home games.
For the sixth consecutive game, forward Leo Lyons reached double figures. In addition to his five rebounds and perfect 4-4 shooting from the field, Lyons scored 11 points.
Tonight's victory marked Missouri's third win against a Mid-Eastern Atlantic School this season. The Tigers defeated McNeese State 81-44 Dec. 15 and then North Carolina A&T 94-66 Dec. 17.
Coppin State did not have a scorer in double figures.
Missouri is now 9-1 when leading at half.
