OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.-- - Senior J.C. Field's three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Mizzou an 11-0 lead over Oklahoma, ending the game as the tournament's run-rule was in effect. Missouri moved to 2-0 in the Big 12 Championships at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. Junior Max Scherzer picked up the win to move to 7-1 on the season, pitching all seven innings on Friday.
The homer for Field was his third of the year and capped a 5-RBI game in which he went 2-for-4. He had a pair of hits in MU's win over Oklahoma State on Wednesday in the first day of the Big 12 Tournament and has had at least two hits in four of the last six games.
Field drove in a pair of runs in the first inning as the Tigers jumped out to an early lead with a five-run bottom of the first. After the Sooners were retired in order in the top of the first, freshman Ryan Lollis and Field each had 2-run singles in the bottom half of the inning. A pair of OU errors aided the Tigers as four of the five runs were unearned.
Friday's first inning for Mizzou was its second-straight five-run inning for after it scored five times in the final inning of the win over OSU on Wednesday.
Senior Derek Chambers hit his fifth home run of the season with two outs in the fourth inning. The solo shot extended the Tigers' lead to 6-0. The Tigers made it a seven run lead in the sixth as sophomore Evan Frey drew a lead off walk and later scored on a wild pitch.
In the seventh inning, senior Zane Taylor and Lollis each singled and sophomore Brock Bond reached on the Sooners' third error of the game, which allowed Taylor to score. Then, after a strikeout and a lineout, Field connected for the home run to end the game.
Scherzer pitched the complete seven innings, allowing just four runs and striking out five. He moves to 7-1 on the season and lowers his ERA to 1.85, which continues to lead the Big 12 Conference. Scherzer retired the first seven OU batters of the game before allowing back-to-back hits in the third. He then faced one over the minimum through the final 4.2 innings.
Missouri has won six-consecutive games, its longest streak of the year. Two years ago at the Big 12 Tournament, MU run-ruled Baylor, 12-1 in seven innings, on its way to a runner-up finish at the tournament.
The Tigers will take on Kansas at 8 p.m. on Saturday in the final game of pool play. Mizzou will need a win over the Jayhawks to advance to the Big 12 Championship game, which is at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
