LUBBOCK, Texas-- - A three-run bottom of the ninth inning by Texas Tech, capped off by a sacrifice fly by Matt Smith, gave the Red Raiders a 5-4 come-from-behind win on Saturday in the second game of the three-game weekend series in Lubbock, Texas. Texas Tech clinches the series after taking the first two games of the weekend.
Missouri led 4-2 with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but a hit-by-pitch, a passed ball and a walk led to an RBI single by Joey Callender. A wild pitch then allowed Willie Rueda to score from third and after an intentional walk, Callender scored the game-winning run on Smith's sacrifice fly.
The Tigers scored the game's first four runs, the first three coming in the second inning. Senior Derek Chambers and sophomore Brock Bond each drew walks to open the second inning and freshman Ryan Lollis followed with a single. Chambers scored when the Red Raiders' catcher dropped the ball on a play at the plate. Bond and Lollis would also cross the plate in the inning.
Mizzou (25-23, 9-14 Big 12) added a run in the fourth inning as junior Hunter Mense reached on the second Tech error of the game allowing sophomore Brock Bond to score, making it a 4-0 Tiger lead.
A pair of solo home runs for Texas Tech (30-20-1, 9-13-1 Big 12) cut the MU lead in half. The first was by Rueda to lead off the fifth and the second came off the bat of Roger Keischnick to open the bottom of the eighth inning. The score would remain 4-2 until the TTU rally in the bottom of the ninth.
Junior Max Scherzer started for MU and matched a season-long with seven innings on the mound. It was his longest stint since going seven innings against Purdue on March 10. He allowed just one run on five hits and struck out four. Scherzer has allowed one or fewer runs in six of his nine starts this season.
Mizzou will wrap up the series with Texas Tech with the final game of the weekend at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Freshman Rick Zagone is scheduled to take the mound in the series finale. All MU games can be heard on KTGR 1580-AM in Columbia and at KTGR.com. Live stats will also be available on mutigers.com.
