COLUMBIA, Mo.-- - Sophomore Jacob Priday's two-run home run in the bottom of eighth inning broke a 1-1 tie and gave Mizzou a 3-1 win in the finale of a three-game series at Taylor Stadium. The victory gives the Tigers the series win, their first since taking the series with Kansas State on March 24-26.
Sophomore Evan Frey led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and Priday followed with his eighth home run of the season, one short of his homer total from last season. Priday finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in on the day.
Priday scored Missouri's (21-21, 9-12 Big 12) first run of the game in the fourth inning by leading off with a single, then moving to third when senior Zane Taylor singled on a perfectly-executed hit-and-run play. Priday then scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Derek Chambers.
Baylor (27-19, 10-11 Big 12) tied it with an unearned run in the seventh inning as Seth Fortenberry doubled, moved to third on a Tiger error and scored on a squeeze play as Tim Jackson laid down the bunt allowing Fortenberry to cross the plate.
Junior Max Scherzer recorded his first win since a victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on March 3. Scherzer pitched the final four innings in relief, allowing just one run - an unearned run - on three hits and striking out six. His fifth strikeout of the game was the 200th of his career. He is now 4-2 on the season.
Freshman Rick Zagone started on the mound for Mizzou and pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three. He was in line for the victory when he left after the fifth inning.
The MU pitching staff allowed just one earned run in the three-game series with Baylor.
The Tigers step out of the Big 12 Conference for their next five games, traveling to Missouri State on Tuesday and Illinois State on Wednesday, before hosting Mississippi Valley State in a three-game series next weekend at Taylor Stadium. All Mizzou games can be heard on KTGR 1580-AM in Columbia and at KTGR.com.
