Las Vegas - The Missouri softball team (18-13) wrapped up a three-game series with UNLV (15-22) dropping an 11-4 loss to the Rebels at Jim Rogers Field. UNLV walked away with two wins in the series and improved to 7-1 all-time against the Tigers.
Despite waiting out a 45 minute rain and lightning delay, the Tiger's bats came out warm as leadoff hitter Gina Schneider (Liberty, Mo.) singled down the left side to reach first. Big 12 Player of the Week Jen Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) followed with a single up the middle sending Schneider to second. Missouri hits leader Micaela Minner (Sanger, Texas) was next up for the Tigers and reached first on a fielder's choice that picked Schneider off at third. Cleanup hitter Amanda Renth (Mascoutah, Ill.) also reached on a fielder's choice in which Minner was tagged out at second while Bruck reached third and advanced home on a throwing error by Rebel second baseman Kendall McSwain.
A true freshman, Schneider was 2-for-3 on the day and helped drive in Missouri's second run of the game with a standup double to deep left field. Sophomore second baseman Amy Henke (Florissant) led off the inning with a single up the middle and stole second for her seventh successful swipe of the season. After Bruck struckout and Minner reached first on a walk, Renth knocked a standup double to the gap in right center sending two Missouri runners home for a 4-0 lead.
Freshman Megan Dennis (Liberty, Mo.) started in the circle for the Tigers and twirled her second complete game, allowing four Rebel runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. A second 13 minute rain delay in the bottom of the fifth gave both teams a brief respite. Play resumed with UNLV at bat and with one out on the board, Maggie Livreri scored on a single through the left side by first baseman Rosa Ordaz. The Rebels added an additional two runs on two hits and two Tiger errors pull ahead 7-4.
Unable to score in the top of the sixth, UNLV came back with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning shutdown the Tigers for the night. Dennis now stands at 2-4 on the season.
The Tigers return home this weekend for their second Big 12 matchup of the season, a two-game series with No. 18 Baylor beginning Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m. (CST).
