GAINESVILLE, Fla. - - One day after pounding out 22 hits against No. 1 Florida, Mizzou managed just five hits against Wake Forest on Saturday, falling 4-3 to the Demon Deacons in day two of the Pepsi Baseball Classic in Gainesville, Fla. Two of the five hits came off the bat of junior Gary Arndt, who also had two of Missouri's three RBI on Saturday.
Junior Nathan Culp went eight innings on the mound, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, on just five hits. He struck out two and walked none, taking his first defeat of the season and falling to 2-1 on the season.
Wake Forest (5-3) scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the second inning, with three scoring on a home run by Austin Jones. That followed back-to-back singles by Casey Sterk and Weldon Woodall. After the second, Culp retired 18 of the next 20 batters he faced.
Arndt got Mizzou (5-3) on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning. The homer was the first of the year for Arndt and the first since his freshman season, when he had a solo shot against Oklahoma State in May of 2004. It was the third homer of his career and the third of the season for the Tigers.
In his next at-bat, coming in the fifth inning, Arndt added a double. It drove in sophomore Brock Bond, who reached on an error to lead off the inning. Arndt finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Missouri pulled within one with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a pair of doubles. The first came from senior Zane Taylor and the second was hit by sophomore Jacob Priday, driving in Taylor. Priday was 2-for-3 with an RBI on Saturday and is 7-for-9 with four RBI, three doubles and two runs scored in the two games this weekend.
Mizzou will conclude action in the Pepsi Baseball Classic against Ohio State at 10 a.m. EST (9 a.m. CST) on Sunday in Gainesville. Freshman Aaron Crow is scheduled to make his second start of the season on Sunday against the Buckeyes. The game can be heard on KTGR 1580-AM in Columbia and on the Web at KTGR.com.
