Box Score
Junior Max Scherzer recorded a win in his first start of the season, as No. 12 Mizzou took game one of a doubleheader with Louisiana-Monroe, 5-1, on Friday. Missouri moved to 3-2 on the season with the win in the opener of a three-game series in Monroe, La., while ULM fell to 0-5.
The Tigers used small ball to take an early lead, getting sacrifice bunts from sophomores Brock Bond and Evan Frey in the second inning. One run scored on Frey's bunt and freshman Ryan Lollis added a two-run double in the inning to give MU a 3-0 lead. The double for Lollis was his first career hit as a Tiger.
Lollis, who was named to the Baseball America Fab 50 Freshman list, was not done, as he doubled for the second time in the game to lead off the sixth. He would score later in the inning on a single by junior Hunter Mense.
Lollis was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in game one. Bond added a pair of hits.
After missing the first week of the season with an injury to the middle finger on his pitching hand, Scherzer was impressive, striking out six in six innings of work. He allowed just one run on four hits to take the victory.
Sophomore John Thies pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings and freshman David Cales retired all three batters he faced in the ninth, including two strikeouts. Cales has now retired all 12 batters he has faced this season.
The final game of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
