STANFORD, Calif. -- Missouri didn't have an answer for Stanford's taller front line as the 11th-ranked Cardinal defeated the Tigers, 75-60, at Maples Pavilion Tuesday night.
Missouri (3-1) got 14 points from sophomore Alyssa Hollins who made four second-half 3-pointers. Freshman Jessra Johnson scored a career-high 12 points in 15 minutes off the bench.
Candice Wiggins led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Stanford (2-1) got a combined 34 points and 20 rebounds from its three primary post players Kristen Newlin, Brooke Smith and Jayne Appel. Newlin posted the lone double-double of the contest with 14 and 10.
Stanford jumped out to a 6-0 before a Tiffany Brooks jumper got MIssouri on the board with 2:31 into the game. Wiggins then scored eight of her 15 first-half points during a 12-11 Cardinal run that made it 18-13.
Johnson drained her second 3-pointer in as many career attempts from the right wing to cut the deficit to 18-16 with 10:45 to play in the half.
The Cardinal lead grew to six on buckets by Wiggins and Cissy Pierce. Hollins and Newlin traded two free throws apiece and Carlynn Savant got a jumper in the paint to make it a four-point game with just over five minutes to play.
Stanford then got a pair of fast-break lay-ups and five free throws to stretch its margin to 33-20. An EeTisha Riddle lay-up halted the momentum briefly before the Cardinal took a 39-22 advantage into the locker room thanks to a 3-pointer from Wiggins and a three-point play from Newlin.
Savant opened the second half with her 106th career 3-pointer but the Tigers were held scoreless for the next four minutes as Stanford increased its lead to 27 with a 13-0 run.
Mizzou answered with a 9-0 skein of its own to trim the margin to 19 with 13:19 remaining. The Tigers hung tough and cut the lead to 12 on Hollins' final 3-pointer with 2:03 on the clock, but that was as close as they would get.
Stanford out-rebounded MU 43-32 and had 42 points in the paint compared to 16 for the Tigers.
Mizzou shot just 33 percent but did connect on eight 3-pointers. The Tigers have averaged eight triples in their last three games.
Missouri will travel to Moraga, Calif. on Wednesday to prepare for the St. Mary's Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Tournament. Mizzou opens the tourney against Alabama on Friday at 5:05 p.m. Pacific time. SMC and Cal State-Northridge will meet in the late game.
