COLUMBIA, Mo. - Nearly 800 had their first look at the 2005 Missouri Volleyball team with the annual Black and Gold Match on Friday night in the Hearnes Center. The black team defeated the gold team in a two-game sweep.
The main focus of the black team's strength came from many of the Tigers' young players. Freshmen Amanda Hantouli (Omaha, Neb.) and Yi Zhang (Su Zhou, China) recorded a match-high four blocks for the black team. In addition, junior Jessica Vander Kooi (Hinton, Iowa) and sophomore Tatum Ailes (Bellevue, Neb.) combined for 23 digs. Another impact performance for the black team came from junior Nicole Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) who posted a .714 hitting percentage, going 10-for-14, without making an error, adding three blocks as well.
For the gold team, Na Yang (Shan Dong, China) led with nine kills, Abbie Booth had 15 digs, and senior Lindsey Hunter had 22 assists along with two service aces.
The black team won game one 30-25, posting a .294 hitting average. In game two, black again won 30-25.
Prior to the scrimmage, more than 250 youth took part in a free volleyball clinic conducted by the MU volleyball players. The Tigers instructed the youngsters on all facets of the game and the clinic allowed the participants to get up-close and personal with the Mizzou volleyball team.
