
Mizzou Drops Opener of NCAA Regionals

FULLERTON, Calif. - - Playing it its 17th NCAA Regional and its third in the last three seasons, Mizzou fell to Arizona in the opener of the Fullerton (Calif.) Regional on Friday night by a score of 5-3.
Missouri will face the loser of the Cal State-Fullerton vs. Harvard game, which followed the Tigers game on Friday, at 4 p.m. PST (6 p.m. CST) on Saturday on ESPNU.
Sophomore Max Scherzer retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced on Friday, allowing no hits and just one walk through the first three innings. However, the first four batters for the Titans in the bottom of the fourth reached on hits and all would score in the inning. After three singles, Jeff Van Houten doubled to drive in two runs. He would score later in the inning on a wild pitch, giving the Wildcats a 4-0 lead.
Mizzou (39-22) would score its first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning, as junior Tyler Williams scored after leading off the inning with a single. The Tigers added a run in the top of the seventh with a pair of singles and walk coming with two outs in the inning. Junior Trevor Helms singled and moved to second when junior Derek Chambers walked. Junior James Boone followed with a single to drive in Helms.
Boone drove in his 73rd run batted in of the season with the single, which puts him in fifth place in the MU record books for RBI in a season. The hit also extended Boone's hitting streak to six games.
The Tigers scored a run in the top of the ninth inning and had the tying run at the plate but were unable to push across any more runs.
Scherzer allowed five runs, all earned, on eight hits in six innings of work. The eight hits and five runs allowed both match season-highs for Scherzer. He struck out three to take his school record season total to 131.
Williams was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Missouri has dropped the opener of the NCAA Regionals in each of its last four appearances.
