
No. 14 Tigers Knock Off No. 1 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas. - - No. 14 Mizzou defeated the No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns on Saturday in Austin, Texas to even the series at one. It is the first win for the Tigers in Austin since 2001.
For the second-straight game, Mizzou (31-12, 11-6) scored first, putting three runs on the board in the second inning on Saturday. After UT starter Adrian Alaniz opened the game by striking out the first four Tigers to the plate, Missouri was able to get to the Longhorn lefthander.
The Tigers had three hits, drew a pair of walks and had a hit batter in the top of the second inning to build a 3-0 lead.
UT (36-9, 12-7) cut into the lead with a run in the bottom half of the second, as Carson Kainer led off the inning with a single and would be driven in on a single by David Maroul. Texas added a run in the bottom of the third to make it a one run MU lead.
Sophomore Hunter Mense and freshman Jacob Priday opened the fifth inning with back-to-back singles, with Mense scoring on Priday's hit to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
The Tigers broke the game open, with a three-run eighth inning. After the first two MU batters in the inning were retired, sophomore Gary Arndt doubled and was followed by a single off the bat of junior Trevor Helms.
Sophomore John McKee walked to load the bases and Mense would reach on an error by the Longhorn first baseman, allowing Arndt to score. Priday followed with a single to drive in Helms and McKee and give the Tigers a five-run lead. All three runs in the eighth were scored with two outs and were unearned.
Arndt was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Helms, Priday and Taylor all finished with two hits on the afternoon. Priday had three RBI, while going 2-for-5.
Sophomore Nathan Culp picked his first win in his last three starts, as he allowed two runs on nine hits and struck out five, while walking just one to move to 7-1 on the season. He leads the team with the seven victories on the year.
The series finale will get underway at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Disch-Falk Field in Austin. Junior right-hander Doug Mathis is scheduled to take the mound for MU on Sunday. Following this weekend's series, MU will return to Taylor Stadium for a midweek game against Southwest Missouri State at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday before three-game series at Nebraska next weekend.
