O'FALLON, Mo. - - Missouri defeated Saint Louis 13-4 in O'Fallon, Mo. on Wednesday night in the 6th Annual Wood Bat Classic. The Tigers have won all six of the games in the series, which utilizes the wood bats in place of the usual aluminum bats.
Mizzou (28-9) snaps a three-game losing streak with the win and scored in double digits for the 19th game this season.
With the score tied at three in the seventh inning, the Tigers broke the game open with a 10-run bottom of the seventh. The first three batters to the plate reached and freshman Jacob Priday singed to drive in freshman Evan Frey. Two runs would score on an error by the Billiken third baseman before adding seven more runs in the inning, including back-to-back two-run double by sophomore John McKee and junior Zane Taylor.
The hit for McKee was the first of the night for him, after he walked in his first four plate appearances. He was 1-for-1 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Taylor, Priday, redshirt freshman Dan Pietroburgo also had two hits and sophomore Gary Arndt was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Junior James Boone put the Tigers up in the second inning, with a solo home run to lead off the inning. The homer was his second in as many games and his sixth of the season.
The lead was short-lived as the Billikens scored a run in the top of the third inning to tie the game at one.
Mizzou strung together four-consecutive hits in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs in the inning on RBI singles by redshirt freshman Dan Pietroburgo and sophomore Gary Ardnt.
SLU (7-28) would once again tie the game as Scott Peden hit a two-run home run down the left field line in the sixth inning that just cleared the foul pole.
The Tigers return to Taylor Stadium this weekend, hosting Oklahoma in a three-game series that will get underway at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. For tickets call 1-800-CAT PAWS (884-PAWS in Columbia) or visit the Mizzou Arena Box Office.
