COLUMBIA, Mo. - - Behind a strong pitching performance by sophomore Max Scherzer, Missouri snapped a two-game losing skid with a 7-1 win over Eastern Michigan in the home opener on Friday night at Taylor Stadium.
Scherzer struck out career-high 13 batters in just six innings, recording his second win of the season. He did not allow a run on four hits and walked four batters.
Sophomore Gary Arndt got Mizzou on the board with a three-run triple in the bottom of the second inning. The Tigers would add another run in the second to take a 4-0 lead, which was more than enough for Scherzer.
Sophomore Hunter Mense had two hits, including a double and scored a run for Mizzou.
The Tigers improve to 8-3 in home openers under Head Coach Tim Jamieson.
Missouri and Eastern Michigan will return to Taylor Stadium on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The final game of the series will be played at noon on Sunday.
