COLUMBIA, Mo. - Near-50-percent shooting from the field in the last 26 minutes of play weren't enough to dig the Missouri women out of a 23-point deficit at the outset, as Kansas registered a 60-42 win in Big 12 Conference action Saturday afternoon at Mizzou Arena. With the win, the Jayhawks sweep the season series and earn 1.5 points for KU in the annual Midwest Ford Dealers Border Showdown.
Missouri started out as cold as Kansas did hot, as the Tigers missed their first eight shots from the field while KU took an 18-2 lead on 8-of-11 field-goal shooting. MU's first bucket didn't come until junior C Christelle N'Garsanet (Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire / Illinois Central College) scored from inside with 12 minutes, 21 seconds left in the first half.
The Tiger shooting woes continued for the next seven minutes, going 1-for-16 until junior G LaToya Bond (Urbana, Ill. / Urbana HS) hit a jumper with 5:49 left to make the score 28-7 in favor of KU.
Mizzou made half of its final eight shots of the first half, and 48 percent in the second (12-for-25) in out-scoring Kansas in the final 20 minutes by a 27-24 margin. And while the Tigers didn't allow Kansas to go to the free-throw line the entire game, the opening 15 minutes were too much to overcome.
N'Garsanet led Missouri (7-13, 1-8 Big 12) with 12 points, while sophomore F Carlynn Savant (Euless, Texas / Trinity HS) had a team-high seven rebounds. Kaylee Brown's 15 points led KU (10-10, 3-6), and Taylor McIntosh had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
"I apologize to our fans. This was a huge embarrassment and a letdown to them. We played a step behind today; we didn't really play with that spark that we needed," Head Coach Cindy Stein said. "We're not making always making good decisions, and the other team's defenses are doing a good job."
The Tigers hit the road on Wednesday to take on Colorado. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CST and will be televised by FSN Rocky Mountain.
