ROCK HILL, S.C. - - Mizzou recorded its first shutout of the season with an 11-0 win over Akron on Sunday in the final day of the Griffin Pontiac Challenge in Rock Hill, S.C. It is the first shutout for the Tigers since they picked up an 8-0 win over Texas last May.
MU scored double digits for the third-straight game and moves to 4-1 on the year.
The Tigers scored runs in each of the first four innings and in five of the first six innings on Sunday.
After scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning, they added three in the second when junior Derek Chambers connected for a three-run home run. Chambers extends his hitting to four games with his first homer of the year.
Freshman Evan Frey drove in a run in the third with a double to left center, scoring Tyler Williams.
In the fourth inning, sophomore John McKee led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly. McKee would add to the lead in the sixth inning, as he connected for a two-run home run to left. MU added two more runs in the fourth to make it an 11-0 lead.
McKee was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored on Sunday.
Senior Erik Dessau improved to 2-0 on the season, as he gave up just three hits and struck out seven in five scoreless innings on the mound.
Next week, Mizzou will travel to Millington, Tenn., for the Easton/USA Challenge. The Tigers face Navy at 10 a.m. on Friday, Indiana State at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Memphis at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The following weekend, MU opens up its home schedule with a three-game series against Eastern Michigan. That series will start at 6:30 p.m. on March 4 at Taylor Stadium.
