Columbia, Mo. -The 12th ranked Missouri wrestling team dropped to 13-3 (0-1) on the season after suffering a 26-12 loss to the sixth-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Hearnes Center. Nebraska improves to 16-1-1, and 1-0 in the competitive Big 12 Conference. Three Tigers recorded wins on the evening and sophomore Ben Askren closed out the night at 174 pounds with his 19th fall of the season, setting a new Missouri single season falls record.
Putting Missouri's first points of the dual on the board, redshirt freshman Tyler McCormick outscored Dominick Moyer 8-2 at 133 pounds. A native of Leawood, Kan., McCormick scored five unanswered points through the first two periods of action allowing Moyer only two escapes at the start and close of the third period. In the end, McCormick racked up 2:20 of riding time for his eighth and final point of the match. With the win, McCormick improves to 19-10 on the season.
Missouri's 165 and 174 pound wrestlers came though once again for the Tigers. Ferguson, Mo., wrestler Tyron Woodley (165), ranked ninth in the nation, broke a two-dual losing streak to NU opponent Jacob Klein (No. 9). Unlike their last pairing, the two were able to settle the score in seven minutes, with Woodley easily handing Klein a 6-3 loss. Woodley and Klein's last go-around went 12 minutes through three overtime periods in which Klein won 4-3. In tonight's bout, Woodley scored the first takedown and never gave up his lead, allowing Klein only one escape in the third period in the Huskers' final attempt at a run.
2004 All-American Askren (Hartland, Wis.) continued his win streak with a fall in 1:46 over Marc Harwood. Their second match of the season, Askren's fall is his 19th of the season, and set a new Missouri single season pin record, knocking previous title-holder Kevin Herron (heavyweight, 2003 graduate) to second. To date, Askren is now 26-0 on his sophomore campaign.
"Once again, we're all walking away from a loss frustrated," Head Coach Brian Smith said. "Several of the guys wrestled well tonight. But, there were several that just couldn't finish the job in the third period. Nebraska is a good team and they're a solid team. The bottom line is that they performed well tonight and we didn't. Now it's time to go back into the room, regroup, refocus, train hard and get ready for our next big challenge."
The Tigers will resume action Friday, Feb. 4, against No. 9 Oklahoma at 7 p.m. in Norman, Okla., and follow with a Saturday, Feb. 5, 2 p.m. dual against the two-time defending national champion Oklahoma State Cowboys.
