LUBBOCK, Texas - Cisti Greenwalt had game highs of 20 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks to lead No. 13 Texas Tech to a 75-45 win over Missouri in Big 12 Conference action Wednesday night at United Spirit Arena.
Sophomore F Tiffany Brooks (Leavenworth, Kan. / Leavenworth HS / Kansas State) led Mizzou with 15 points, while junior C Christelle N'Garsanet (Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire / Illinois Central College) added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
"At halftime, I was fairly pleased with where we were, with the exception of that three at the buzzer," Head Coach Cindy Stein said. "It's hard to play a team as deep as they are, and our guards had to play at such a high level. I'm asking this team to change their style of play because of our injuries, and that's hard to do. I thought we had good effort from everybody, but we turned the ball over too much."
The Tigers (7-11, 1-6 Big 12) were able to muster just three free throws from Brooks, yet the Lady Raiders started just 1-for-9 as the Tigers held a 3-2 lead at the first media timeout. Both teams went inside, with N'Garsanet and Greenwalt getting a lot of touches.
Both teams also stepped up the pace, as the Tigers hit half of their next eight shots, while Texas Tech (15-3, 6-1) hit 6-of-7 in taking a 14-11 lead with 11:37 left in the first half on LaToya Davis' second straight bucket inside. Mizzou then went on a 7-1 run to take an 18-16 lead on a nice entry pass from sophomore F EeTisha Riddle (O'Fallon, Ill. / O'Fallon HS) that senior C Megan Roney (Independence, Mo. / Truman HS) converted for a layup.
Tech regained the lead with back-to-back buckets from Greenwalt, and after two free throws from LaToya Bond (Urbana, Ill. / Urbana HS) Tech took a 24-20 lead with 4:51 left in the first half. A Brooks floater on the right baseline with 1:28 left was all the Tigers could muster in the final six minutes of play, though, allowing the Lady Raiders to slowly build a 35-22 halftime lead that was capped with a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Alesha Robertson. The Tigers made just 8-of-26 shots (30.8 percent) in the opening 20 minutes, yet also held Tech to just 37.5-percent shooting (12-of-32). Robertson's trey was the only one for either team in the first half.
Texas Tech made four of its first five shots to start the second half, while Mizzou went 0-for-7 as the Lady Raiders opened its lead to 22 points (44-22) with 15:49 left to play. Tech added four more points before a Bond steal and layup ended a 28-2 run that spanned halftime. Riddle got a layup on the fastbreak the next trip down to bring Mizzou back to within 22 (48-26), yet the Lady Raiders continued to hold the Tigers at bay.
The Tigers return home this Saturday morning, in an 11 a.m. FSN telecast against No. 15 Texas at Mizzou Arena. For ticket information, visit the Mizzou Arena Box Office, or call 1-800-CAT-PAWS (573-884-PAWS in Mid-Missouri).
