Missouri Head Coach Gary Pinkel
Opening Statement:
"I want to first emphasize the great job that Brady Hoke and the Cardinals did today. They play in a tough conference and have a tough schedule. You might not be able to tell from today but they are improving. He's done a heck of a job building that program. For the game, I think that we played a complete game. It felt a lot better getting the bad taste out of our mouth from last week. This was the best team performance this season. Now it's Big 12 time, we've got to become a better football team because we can be much better than we are right now."
On the game:
"I think that we did some good things. We're still a long way from becoming a great football team so we need to focus on getting better. We protected the ball better and played a much cleaner game. We had a few penalties but not too many. Both [Adam] Crossett and [Joe] Tantarelli did good things out there today. Crossett did a god job punting and Joe added some consistency in the kicking game. We looked like a well-coached football team. Now that we're entering Big 12 play the competition will increase so we need to focus on becoming a better football team."
On the running backs getting involved in the passing game:
"Our running backs have good hands. Damien [Nash] and Marcus [Woods] are both players that can some good things with the ball. It's good that we can get everyone involved."
On the expectation level:
"There is a high expectation level out there for our program, and there should be. The first thing that I told them after the game last week was that we let a lot of people down. Missouri fans expect to have a good team and expect to see the performance level to match the expectation level. When we have 60,000 fans they deserve to see a good performance."
On becoming a better football team:
"We've got to become a better football team. Every area of the team needs to become better. Missouri has to become better and if we're able to do that, we can do some big things this season."
On the play of William Franklin:
"He did a great job. He's a very 'heady' athlete, he's able to see the field and find space. On top of that he's just a great kid. Because he can do all of these things he will continue to get better and better."
Victor Sesay
On the game:
"We came alive out there today. We came out there ready and focused. We had a long seven days of rest, and just came out ready to play."
On the plays this game:
"We don't focus on the plays, but the game, executing them right, and putting some touchdowns up. We had a long seven days or so, and we had to think about something. Coach put up some plays, and it worked."
Brandon Coleman
On his playing time today:
"I haven't really been able to play a game like that since high school. Then I got to play against Arkansas State. I'm just happy to be able to get out there and contribute to my team."
On his pass to Will Franklin:
"It was exhilarating. Coach thought of a good play. I was just the lucky one that got to throw it. Will did all the work. He got out there and made the catch. I just threw it. The offensive line had good protection, and that was all that I needed."
Xzavie Jackson
On the pressure on Ball State's quarterback:
"We had good pressure. That's what it takes to get sacks, get take-aways, and get that shut-out that we had today. We worked hard on it in practice."
On the defense:
"We're a great team. We just came back from a hard loss on national T.V., and now we just have to go show the nation that we can play in the Big 12."
Thomson Omboga
On coming back from a loss and beating Ball State:
"It wasn't that difficult. We felt like we let our fans down by going down there last week and losing. We just practiced all week. We've got a good team, and we work hard. We just had to go back and get it."
Damien Nash
On winning this game and the expectations from everyone:
"With losing at Troy State last week, we had to come back and redeem ourselves. This was just a good redemption, to go out here and play good. Offense was good, the defense played good. We've just got to keep it up."
On having the next two weeks off:
"It's a good thing, and it's a bad thing. The bad part is that we're always ready to play, but the good part is that we get to work on it a little more."
Brad Smith
On coming back with a win after last week's loss:
"It was definitely a rough week. This past week, guys were upset and just wanted to come out and play football. We just had to put that behind us. Today was a good win for us."
On his running game:
"The openings were there. They're always there. I've just got to take them. The guys blocked well."
On the next two weeks off:
"I think it will be a positive thing. We can use it just to get better. It's going to make us a better team."
On Thomson Omboga's punt returns:
"He's a great player. He's a play-maker. We've always known that. Every time he touches the ball, he does big things with it."
Ball
State Head Coach Brady Hoke
On the game overall:
"We got whipped pretty good. Their quarterbacks made a lot of plays, we couldn't make the plays. We couldn't convert third downs, we couldn't stop third downs when we had the opportunities. [Our] Kicking game stunk."
On the momentum after the first half:
"You let a team score at the end of the half, the momentum and all those things completely turn around. That happened. We paid for it."
On the Ball State offense:
"We ran the ball well early. When we went back to throw the ball, we didn't protect. It's hard to throw the ball when you get no protection. It's been a problem in the last couple games. Obviously that trend continued and we have to get a heck of a lot better up front."
On the Missouri defense:
"They're an aggressive defense. We had some good checks, we ran into them and they started checking our checks. It was definitely a game of cat and mouse."
"Obviously I think Missouri has a very athletic defense, a good defensive front, and same with Purdue. Yeah I think that hurt us, but we gotta do a better job of putting points on the board. That's an understatement. Our whole football has to improve."
On the Missouri offense:
"We had Brad Smith contained a couple times, and he makes a great athletic play for a first down."
Senior safety Justin Beriault
On Ball State's struggle to stop Missouri quarterback Brad Smith...
"Unfortunately, that's what he's done throughout his career. You can't give that guy two or three opportunities to make plays, because he's going to make them. He's proven that over and over again. We have to take the blame for that. We had him, and then we didn't."
On Ball State's inability to stop the Tigers' running game...
"I don't know what the statistics are or anything, but I'm sure they had a lot of rushing yards. It's something we have to get better on. We have to work on it and get better in practice. We start conference play next week, so it's kind of a new season for us."
On Ball State's confidence entering the game...
"They're a very good team, obviously. We didn't feel like (beating Missouri) was something that we couldn't do. We just had a lot of breakdowns, and Brad Smith was a part of that because that's what he does. We had the confidence, and I think we had the ability to hang with these guys."
Sophomore quarterback Joey Lynch
On the amount of blitzes he saw from the Missouri defense...
"They blitzed a lot. We were expecting the blitz, but I don't know if we were expecting that much. We prepared for it, but we just have to get better."
On Ball State's handling of the blitz...
"As a team, we have to get better. Whether it's protection or me making my reads, or just getting into the right protection, we just aren't getting it right. We need to get to that point."
On Ball State's inability to score...
"We're going into the MAC, and we want to win the MAC championship. In order to do that, you have to score touchdowns. That's on the offense. We have to do a better job of getting guys going and keeping the defense off the field. We need to score touchdowns."
