FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.-- - Missouri opened play in the NCAA Regionals, by falling to Wichita State 3-0 on Friday in Fayetteville, Ark. The pitchers took control of the game as MU senior starter Danny Hill was solid, allowing two earned runs on eight hits, but was outdone by WSU starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey.
Pelfrey nearly went the distance, pitching 8.2 innings, allowing just four hits to Mizzou and striking out a career-high 14.
Hill struck out five in seven innings of work and allowed two or fewer earned runs in a game for the ninth time this season.
The Shockers did most of their damage in the second inning, as the recorded five straight singles with two outs. They scored two runs in the inning to give Pelfrey an early 2-0 lead to work with. WSU would add a run in the bottom of the seventh for the final 3-0 margin.
Missouri struggled to put together a scoring threat, as it managed to get a runner to second base only once in the game.
The four hits for MU is its lowest hit total in the last 15 games. Mizzou was shutout for the first time in nearly a month and the third time this season.
Missouri has lost two games in a row for the first time in 14 games.
The Tigers will now have to comeback through the losers' bracket in the double elimination tournament. They will face the loser of the Arkansas and Le Moyne game, which followed MU/WSU game, at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The ZRG Radio Network (1580 KTGR in Columbia) will carry the game with Tex Little and Luke Cassis providing the commentary. The broadcasts can also be heard online www.KTGR.com.
