AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Hans Uldal stands in 16th place after the first day of the decathlon competition at the NCAA Track & Field Championships. Uldal's score of 3,826 points is only 18 points shy of his first day personal best. Junior Jenny Bybee hit a season-best clearing two bars in the women's high jump for a 16th place finish.
Uldal led off the day with his best-ever 100-meter dash, clocking in at 11.08. After a very good long jump of 23 feet, 9? inches (7.25m), Uldal stood in seventh place overall after two events. In the shot put, the next event, Uldal threw for an 18-inch personal-best toss of 46-8 (14.22m), placing him in sixth after three.
The high jump proved to be Uldal's nemesis on day one. After clearing his opening height of 5-7? (1.73m), Uldal missed his next height and finished last as a result, dropping him to 16th overall. Uldal stayed in 16th after running his final event of the day, the 400-meter dash, in 50.90 seconds.
"Hans did well today and expect he will bounce back and finish with a great score tomorrow," said Matt Candrl, Missouri decathlon coach.
The second day of the decathlon is traditionally Uldal's best. Still to come will be the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and the 1500-meter run.
Bybee was challenged with an opening height of 5-8? (1.74m), her season-best-to-date was close at 5-9? (1.76m). After missing on her first two attempts, Bybee leaped over the opener. Next was the bar at 5-10 (1.78m). Again, Bybee missed her first two attempts, but cleared her third. Bybee next attempted at 5-11? (1.81m) which was above her personal-best. Bybee came close on her third attempt to clear, but kicked out the bar near the end point.
Bybee finished 13th at last year's NCAA Championships after qualifying for the finals. This year's finals was absolved due to Wednesday's adverse conditions.
Tomorrow, Uldal will begin the final day of the decathlon at 12 o'clock, noon. The Tigers could have a big day tomorrow with Janae Strickland (W Shot Put), Conrad Woolsey (M Shot Put), Holly Scherder (W Hammer Throw), and Amanda Bales (W 5000m) will compete for top national spots in their event finals.
