ARLINGTON, Texas.-- - The Missouri Tiger baseball team defeated Oklahoma 9-5 on Wednesday in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament at Ameriquest Field in Arlington, Texas. Missouri, which was swept by the Sooners earlier in the season, recorded its fifth straight win with the victory.
Junior Garrett Broshuis remained unbeaten on the season as he took the win to move to 10-0 on the year. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing six hits and four runs, all of which were unearned. Broshuis stuck out five and walked one. He became the first Tiger pitcher to record 10 wins in a season since Tom Heckman did it in 1981.
Mizzou (35-20-1) opened up a 6-0 lead after five innings before Oklahoma scored five runs in the seventh inning to get within a run. The Tigers then put together a three-run ninth inning and held on for the victory.
Missouri got a pair of base hits, a walk and a Sooner error leading to its first runs of the game in the second inning. Senior Jeremy Hernandez scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Brad Flanders and freshman John McKee scored on an error by the OU shortstop.
The Tigers doubled their lead in the fourth inning when senior Ryan Rallo doubled to left, driving in a pair of runners.
The lead grew to 6-0 with another two-run inning, in the sixth, which included an RBI-double down the left field line. Flanders finished the day 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored.
Oklahoma (36-21) cut the lead to one as it put five runs on the board in the seventh inning. All five of the runs were unearned as the Tigers made two errors in the inning.
MU scored three insurance runs in the top of the ninth and senior Mark Alexander recorded his 10th save of the year. The appearance for Alexander on Wednesday was his 32nd of the year, tying the school record set by Scott Black in 1988. His 10 saves put him in second on MU' s season saves lists, trailing only Ryan Stegall's 12 saves in 2000.
Next up for Missouri will be Baylor, which defeated Texas Tech 8-3 on Wednesday, at 5 p.m. on Thursday. The ZRG Radio Network (1580 KTGR in Columbia) will carry all of the Tigers' games with Tex Little and Luke Cassis providing the commentary. The broadcasts can also be heard online www.KTGR.com.
