Cantwell and Peterson To Take Part In Home Depot Invitational

COLUMBIA, Mo. - On Saturday, May 22, Missouri track and field post-collegians Christian Cantwell and Derrick Peterson will take part in the second annual Home Depot Invitational in Carson, Calif. Cantwell will be looking for his 11th consecutive shot put crown, while Peterson will continue to improve his prominence in the 800-meter event. NBC will air live coverage of the event from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., central time.
Cantwell will compete against five others in a potent field of North American shot putters. Among the field are John Godina and Adam Nelson, two American medallists from the 2000 Olympics.
Cantwell (Eldon, Mo.) won his tenth consecutive shot put final last weekend at the Ward Haylett Invitational in Manhattan, Kan. His winning throw of 69 feet, 3? inches (21.11m), currently ranks as the world's second longest throw for the 2004 outdoor season. Godina currently is number one on the list, throwing for 69 feet, 11? inches (21.32m) in April in San Diego. The men's shot put is scheduled for 3:45 p.m., central time.
Peterson (Atlanta, Ga.) will take on several top athletes in the 800-meter run. Winning with a personal-best time of 1:48.72 last weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational, Peterson will look to improve his time on the two-year old track.
NBC will air live coverage of the event from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., central time on Saturday. Check local listings for station and time. In Columbia, the local NBC affiliate is KOMU-TV, Channel 8.
The Home Depot Invitational is part of USA Track & Field's Golden Spike Tour which will include some of Cantwell's and Peterson's future meets, ultimately training them for July's Olympic Trials. Also on the tour will be the Payton Jordan U.S. Open on May 31st, in Palo Alto, Calif., the adidas Track Classic in Gresham, Ore., on June 5th, and the Nike Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., on June 19th.
