NORMAN, Okla.-- - The Oklahoma Sooners scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to comeback and defeat Mizzou 4-3 in the series finale in Norman, Okla. on Sunday. The Sooner swept the three-game series over Missouri, dropping the Tigers to 21-12-1 on the season and 2-7 in the Big 12 Conference.
Mizzou looked to have turned around its troubles it has had at the plate early in Sunday's game, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first inning. The Tigers knocked the Sooner starting pitcher, Ryan Mottern, of the game after just one-third of an inning pitched.
Those three runs, however, were all the MU could put across the plate.
Sophomore RF James Boone and senior DH Lee Laskowski got things going in the first with back-to-back singles with one out in the inning. Senior 1B Cody Ehlers then drew a walk to load the bases and senior LF Ryan Rallo reached on an error, scoring Boone and Laskowski. Ehlers scored the third run of the inning on an RBI single by sophomore CF Tyler Williams.
The Sooners put a run on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning as OU catcher Brandon Lance singled and later scored on a fielder's choice by the Sooner lead off batter Russell Raley.
Oklahoma opened the bottom of the ninth inning with two singles. Erik Thornton followed with a double to the wall in left center to drive in both baserunners and tie the game. After a pair of intentional walks to load the bases, Jeff Scuderi singled down the left field line to drive in the game-winning run.
Junior RHP Garrett Broshuis turned in his longest outing of the season in his ninth start. He pitched eight-plus innings, allowing the three runs on eight hits in the no decision.
Mizzou will travel to Springfield, Mo. on Wednesday to face Southwest Missouri State at 7 p.m. at the new Hammonds Field. The ZRG Radio Network (1580 KTGR in Columbia) will carry all of the Tigers' games with Tex Little and Luke Cassis providing the commentary. The broadcasts can also be heard online www.KTGR.com.
