NORMAN, Okla.-- - Oklahoma defeated Missouri 8-5 on Saturday to hand the Tigers their fifth straight defeat. Trailing by seven runs, MU scored four in the seventh inning, but were unable to get any closer to the Sooners. Mizzou falls to 21-22-1 on the year and 2-6 in the Big 12.
Oklahoma scored runs in four of the first five innings. After the first two Sooner batters in the first inning were retired by junior RHP Erik Dessau, Oklahoma drew a walk and had back-to-back singles to put the game's first run of the game.
The Sooners scored four times on three hits, a walk and a hit batter in the bottom of the third inning to build a five-run lead. They would add another run in the fourth inning and put two runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning.
Mizzou's first run of the game came in the top of the fifth inning, as the Tigers put together a two-out rally. After the first two batters to the plate did not reach base in the fifth, freshman SS Gary Arndt drew a walk and scored when sophomore 2B Zane Taylor doubled. Taylor's doubled extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
The Tigers finally showed their offensive capabilities, as they put four runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning. Taylor singled for his second hit of the day and would score on a double to right field by senior DH Lee Laskowski. With two outs in the innings, MU drew a pair of walks, the second walk was with the bases loaded, forcing in a run. Senior C Brad Flanders then hit a bloop single into shallow right center which drove in two runs to cut the OU lead to three.
MU's bats would go cold again, as it was unable to get anything across the plate in the eighth or ninth inning.
The series will conclude the series with game three of the weekend at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The ZRG Radio Network (1580 KTGR in Columbia) will carry all of the Tigers' games with Tex Little and Luke Cassis providing the commentary. The broadcasts can also be heard online www.KTGR.com.
